Lycos and Infoseek (1994)

Lycos began as a search engine research project by Dr. Michael Loren Mauldin of Carnegie Mellon University in 1994. Bob Davis joined the company as its CEO and first employee in 1995. Lycos then enjoyed several years of growth and, in 1999, became the most visited online destination in the world, with a global presence in more than 40 countries. Lycos Users were now able to determine the accuracy of their search efforts to home in on the desired information.

Infoseek was a very popular search engine founded in 1994 by Steve Kirsch. It was also known as “big yellow”. Infoseek was originally operated by the Infoseek Corporation, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Infoseek featured a very complex system of search modifiers, including boolean modifiers such as the most basic “OR” and “NOT”, parentheses, and quotes.
